Social media: All-access pass to power?
[ Mon, 18 Jul 2016 22:28:50 EDT ]
Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄan's response to the botched coup attempt this weekend revealed something important about the laws of power in social media. Like other turning points in the Middle East since 2011, the news was relayed first and foremost by smartphones. But unlike the events in Cairo's Tahrir Square, which many called the "Facebook Revolution," in Turkey the revolutionaries were not the ones pointing the cameras.

The best and worst Pokemon Go stories
[ Mon, 18 Jul 2016 22:23:42 EDT ]
Y'all, Pokemon Go has been out for just over a week and it has already inspired enough craziness and hot takes to last us until the end of time. If we wrote about every single funny tweet or poor sap who fell in a lake while trying to catch a Rattata (not worth it), we would never sleep.

Rare 'Frankenstein' galaxy discovered
[ Wed, 13 Jul 2016 11:50:18 EDT ]
Since its discovery in the 1960s, astronomers believed that in a relatively quiet suburb of our universe 250 million light-years away, there lived a boring little galaxy named UGC 1382 that was otherwise unremarkable -- apart from being a system of millions of stars, gas and dust being held together by gravity. It is one of 12,921 listed in the Uppsala General Catalogue of Galaxies, or UGC.
