Fossilized eggshells yield DNA

DNA samples from the eggshells of extinct birds, like this elephant bird egg, could provide valuable insight into the evolutionary histories of a number of animal species.In a scientific breakthrough that opens a window to now-extinct animals from the prehistoric past, researchers have just successfully recovered DNA from several fossilized eggshells collected from Australia, New Zealand and Madagascar.
