Russians report snag in space safety system

A Soyuz rocket lifts off from its launch pad at Russia's Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan in May 2009, sending a three-person crew to the International Space Station. Russian officials say the rocket's launch escape tower malfunctioned during the ascent.When astronauts blast off to the International Space Station in a Soyuz spacecraft on Friday, they'll be relying on a safety system that failed in a still-unexplained manner less than a year ago, a top Russian space official said on Tuesday.
