Small telcos fear government-backed networks

Network engineer Will Duquette, of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, adjusts power wires in a fuse panel at Great Works Internet in Biddeford, Maine. The so-called Three Ring Binder project, a 1,100-mile network of three interconnected fiber rings, will bring ultra-fast connections to Great Works and other Maine Internet service providers that need bandwidth. From the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Great Plains, some local phone and cable companies fear they will have to compete with government-subsidized broadband systems, paid for largely with stimulus dollars.
