Amazon went down yesterday — but why?

The usually stalwart Amazon.com experienced an unexplained outage on Tuesday, shown in this screenshot taken during the troubles.Amazon was "experiencing an issue," third-party merchants were advised yesterday. Yet we still don't know why.
