These two cut marks were made on the rib bone of a cow-sized or larger animal found in Ethiopia. The bone is thought to be at least 3.4 million years old, and scientists suggest that they were made by stone tools used by Australopithecus afarensis, the species of hominid that included "Lucy."Scientists say that they've found the earliest evidence for the use of stone tools by a human ancestor — but other experts counter that the evidence is "very thin ... and very ambiguous."
