Researchers at the University of Southern California estimated the data stored on electronic devices as well as the world's texts to determine that the total information storage capacity in 2007 was 295 trillion megabytes. But they also estimated that the digital-information capacity doubles in less than two years — which means the current number is significantly higher. The tipping point came in 2002 — that was when the world began storing more information in digital than in analog format, researchers say. They say the world's storage capacity reached 295 trillion megabytes by 2007.
