Arctic ozone hole detected for the first time

This color-coded map of Earth's north polar region shows ozone in the stratosphere at an altitude of approximately 12 miles (20 kilometers) in mid-March 2011, near the peak of the 2011 Arctic ozone loss. Scientists say the high atmosphere over the Arctic lost an unprecedented amount of its protective ozone earlier this year, so much that conditions echoed the infamous ozone hole over the Antarctic.
