New clue may point to fate of Lost Colony

A transmitted light image shows a symbol underlying a paper patch that was applied to a late 16th-century map of present-day Virginia and North Carolina. The symbol may represent a fort associated with the Lost Colony, researchers say.A new look at a 425-year-old map has yielded a tantalizing clue about the fate of the Lost Colony, the settlers who disappeared from North Carolina's Roanoke Island in the late 16th century.
