Religious groups vie for new Web domain names
[ Fri, 31 Aug 2012 15:12:30 GMT ]
PARIS -- Centuries-old theological disputes have broken out in cyberspace as religions aim to influence the future presentation of faith on the Internet. The forum for the rivalry is not the pulpit or church bulletin, but the website of ICANN, the corporation that oversees the Internet address system and now wants to expand it beyond the usual .com, .org or .net domains.

Laptops have become so slender lately that we've begun wondering if our beloved gadgets are at the point of being so thin that they can be used to slice, dice and chop. NBCNews.com's Rosa Golijan tests a theory. (NBCNews.com)

Making a video game espousing the virtues of compassion, sacrifice and spirituality doesn't sound like a winner in today's battle-happy gaming environment. But 27 years ago, it was exactly the type of game that caught the imagination and spurred excitement in gamers.

How Apple's story is like 'Breaking Bad'
[ Fri, 31 Aug 2012 09:15:49 EDT ]
There's a reason why we tech writers are so endlessly fascinated by the story of Apple. The rise, fall and stunning rise again of the tech company has, over several decades, been like watching a really good, long-running cable TV drama -- in particular, a relentlessly tense and engrossing one called "Breaking Bad."

Oops! 101-year-old woman isn't actually Facebook's oldest user
[ Thu, 30 Aug 2012 15:55:36 GMT ]
It's understandable that Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg thought that 101-year-old Florence Detlor is the social network's oldest user. After all, Lee Stern had mistakenly set her date of birth to Aug. 18, 1913. In reality, Stern was born on Aug. 24, 1910 â making her 102 years old.

Google+ now has birthday reminders, too
[ Wed, 29 Aug 2012 14:38:32 GMT ]
Many find Facebook's birthday reminders silly. Either they're overlooked entirely or lead to a post attack that clutters up someone's Wall (or Timeline). The folks behind Google+, on the other hand, might've just figured out how to make birthday reminders better (or less annoying, at least).
